Unfold Structure for Forming the Cylinder

2025

Bungeoppang (a Korean fish-shaped pastry) is commonly used in Korea as a metaphor for things that look the same, since they are pressed from the same mold. However, when you take a closer look at freshly made bungeoppang, each one reveals slight differences in form. Because they are made by hand—batter poured, flipped, and baked by a person rather than a machine—they can never be completely identical.
The same, yet not the same.

Like a street vendor selling bungeoppang, Kyuwon presents pocket keychains from behind a cart on wheels, each made from the same pattern. Though constructed from an identical unfolding structure, they acquire distinct shapes and expressions through the manual processes of cutting, folding, and stitching.

[Unfold Structure for Forming the Cylinder] is a project that explores the transformation from flatness to volume, from non-function to function. A flat piece of fabric folds into a cylindrical form, and in that moment, it gains the ability to contain an object. A simple pattern, through handwork, becomes a small functional pocket.

Beginning from the same structure, each pocket exists in a different form.
